Manmohan Singh: News
Dr. Manmohan Singh is an eminent economist and a senior politician from the Indian National Congress (INC). He was the 13th Prime Minister of India. Born in 1932 in Gah (in present-day Pakistan), his family migrated to Amritsar after India’s partition. Singh did his bachelor’s and master’s from Panjab University, studied economics at the University of Cambridge, and obtained DPhil from the University of Oxford. Post his return to India in the ‘70s, he served as an advisor, primarily on financial matters, in the Indian Government. He served as the Economic Adviser—Foreign Trade Ministry (1971-72), Chief Economic Adviser—Finance Ministry (1972-76), Director of both RBI and IDBI (1976-80), Secretary—Finance Ministry (1977-80), RBI’s Governor (1982-85), Deputy Chairman—Planning Commission (1985-87), Economic Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister (1990-91). In 1991, Singh was elected to the Rajya Sabha and was appointed the Union Finance Minister the same year. He was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1995, 2001, 2007, and 2013. Singh is known for saving the country from a grave economic crisis in a series of liberalization policies, leading to a much-needed turnaround in the economy. Singh was appointed the Prime Minister in 2004 and held the post until 2014. After 2014, he has taken a step back from active politics, although he remains a part of the INC.
